What is a Breast Augmentation?

A breast augmentation involves the insertion of implants into the chest area to add volume or change their shape. This is a more invasive cosmetic procedure, requiring general anesthesia, although it is performed as an outpatient procedure and patients can go home the same day as surgery.

What to Expect – Breast Augmentation Surgery

At Valencia Plastic Surgery, we educate our patients about what to expect when undergoing surgery, after surgery, and during recovery. Generally, you can expect the following sequence of events: On the day of your surgery, you will arrive early to our surgical center. The procedure is performed under local anesthetic with intravenous sedation, or general anesthesia. The incision is placed according to the type of implant you have chosen.

Arrange the Help You Need

It is important that you plan ahead, arrange for help for transport and to stay with you for the first day at least. Fill all prescriptions and purchase easy food options and plenty of healthy drinks, including water. Arrange your bed or a recliner with everything you may want nearby, such as books, digital devices, remotes, etc. Advance planning will help make the early stages of healing more comfortable for you.

Physical Activities

You will be restricted on the type of motions you can make after surgery, as it is important that you do not place any stress upon the sutures. No lifting, stretching, or other motions until your incisions have healed. If you have small children or pets, no lifting. The positive side is that healing typically progresses very quickly, and you will soon be able to reveal your new breasts, which will be plump, rounded, and beautiful – at last.

Who is a Good Candidate for a Breast Augmentation Procedure in Santa Clarita?

If you are in the Valencia area and are looking for among the best breast augmentation Valencia has to offer, then you have come to the right place.

Dr. Hu asks that patients:

  • Be in good health, both physically and mentally
  • Have no major medical issues
  • Be a non-smoker, or willing to quit prior to surgery
  • Have realistic expectations for improvement rather than perfection, based on consultation with the doctor
  • Be suffering from concerns with breast deflation and loss of volume
  • Desire a boost in self-confidence
  • Desire a sexier, more youthful aesthetic

Recovery from Breast Augmentation

After your surgery, you will need several weeks to recover. Many of our patients feel well enough to return to work in one week, but it is advised that you plan on two weeks away from work.

It is normal to experience some swelling and bruising following a breast augmentation. You will be wearing a compression bandage or surgical bra while the area heals – this garment holds your new breasts secure, so they heal correctly.

No Lifting, No Stretching, No Exercise

No lifting or stretching – this can put stress on the sutures. Taking gentle walks is the safest exercise during the first week and aids in circulation, speeding healing. Ensure you eat healthy foods, drink plenty of water, and avoid alcohol during this period. A specific massage will also be taught to you, which you will perform several times a day once any stitches are removed.

Follow-Up Appointments with Dr. Hu

Dr. Hu carefully monitors his patients and will see you in follow-up appointments. If you had drainage tubes or sutures do not naturally absorb, these will need to be removed in about one week.

For best results in recovery, all you need to do is follow your aftercare instructions that we provide. Don’t worry, we will be checking on your progress during your recovery! If you have any questions or concerns, we are always available.

Will I Be in Pain?

Some discomfort is to be expected, and you will have prescription pain medication to help you stay comfortable through the first stages of healing. Most of our patients tell us the recovery is far less stressful and painful than they expected and are thrilled with their new breasts!

About one month after your surgery, the full results of your augmentation will be visible. The incision scars will be hidden from view, even when wearing revealing tops, including bras and swimsuits. The scars will fade over time and although they will never fully disappear, they are not particularly visible when fully healed, as they blend in with your skin tone, appearing like a fine white line.

How is a Breast Augmentation Performed?

Your breast augmentation in Valencia will be performed under general anesthesia.

Dr. Hu offers two incision options:

  • Periareolar (around the edge of the nipple)
  • Inframammary (under the breast)

Breast augmentation surgery can have lasting results, but typically require revisions or replacements sometime in the future. On average, implants can last 10 years or longer. However, breasts can change after surgery, due to aging or having children, and may require a breast lift or replacement of the implants to a different size. Implants can leak that may require replacement. Patients may develop a capsular contracture, where the scar tissue around the implant hardens. This may require another operation to remove the scar tissue and replace the implant.

In all these cases, the secondary operation would be performed through a periareolar incision, or sometimes an inframammary incision. Therefore, it makes sense to use a periareolar or inframammary incision for your initial breast augmentation, since the same incision can be used for any future breast surgery that may be needed.

The type of incision you require will depend on the type of implant you choose and the size of your areolas. Because silicone implants are pre-filled and solid, they require larger incisions for placement. Silicone implants may not be able to be placed through a periareolar incision in patients with very small areolar diameters. Dr. Hu will discuss the various incision options with you ahead of time to ensure you know what to expect during surgery.

Dr. Hu realizes that there are two other incision options: transaxillary (through the armpit) and transumbilical (through the belly button, often referred to as TUBA). Dr. Hu performed both methods earlier in his career but has since moved away from these techniques.

As silicone breast augmentation has gotten more popular, the belly button approach has lessened in utility, since only saline implants can be placed through that technique. The armpit method doesn’t leave a scar on the breast, which can be desirable, however it suffers from the same limitations as the belly button technique, which is that future breast revisions often cannot be performed through those incisions.

Where are my Implants Placed?

Your implants may be placed underneath the muscle (submuscular) or over the muscle (subglandular). While the vast majority of patients undergo submuscular placement for their implants, there is a small subset of patients that may wish to have subglandular placement instead. Dr. Hu will go over both options at the time of consultation to determine which would be best for you.

Breast augmentation surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure, under general anesthesia. The operation typically takes about 1 hour. Afterwards, the patient is monitored for approximately 1 to 2 hours, and when cleared can go home the same day. The patient will be seen the following day for a quick check-up.

Breast Augmentation Frequently Asked Questions

Which is Best - Silicone or Saline Implants?

While both types of breast implants can create beautifully-shaped breasts, they are slightly different. Silicone implants are more commonly selected as these implants feel the most like natural breast tissue. Saline implants have advantages too – one of which is that as they are filled after placement, the incisions are smaller. This is a very personal decision and can be discussed with us at your initial consultation, so you have all the facts to make the right decision.

Do Breast Implants Come with a Warranty?

Yes – most silicone breast implants come with a warranty of ten years after surgery that protects against the risk of deflation and provides up to $3,500 towards replacement surgery costs. There is quite a low risk of rupture, but it can occur in some rare cases.

Which Incisions are Best for Breast Augmentation?

In most cases, the incision is chosen based upon the physiology and needs of the patient, as well as the size of the implants to be placed. This is a topic your doctor can explain more about during your consultation.

Are Silicone Implants Safe?

There are few medical devices that have come under as much scrutiny as silicone breast implants. The FDA investigated this issue and eventually concluded there was no connection between silicone implants and disease. Modern silicone implants are far superior to older versions and come in a wide range of sizes and shapes.

How Long is the Recovery After Breast Implants?

While each patient heals differently, most of our patients are surprised at how quickly they recover from breast augmentation. Many of our patients feel well enough to return to work after just a week, while others may require more time. The main issue is that you must avoid vigorous motions during healing, so those who work in more physically strenuous jobs may need a longer recovery period.

Will I be in Pain?

You may experience some discomfort in the first days after surgery, which is easily managed with prescription pain medication.

Should My Breast Implants Be Placed Above Or Below The Muscle?

Every person has a unique body. Implants placed below the muscle tend to look more natural. Women with more breast tissue may have the option of implant placement above the muscle. Only a personal evaluation will reveal which placement option will produce the most beautiful outcome for your body.

What Are Gummy Bear Breast Implants?

This is a cute name for one of the latest innovations and widely touted. These implants are produced in a teardrop shape, more closely mimicking natural breast shape. The gel in the implants is cohesive so it better holds shape. The fact is that a correctly placed round implant can look just as beautiful and natural.

How Should I Choose the Right Plastic Surgeon for Breast Augmentation?

Experience is a vital aspect of a successful breast augmentation – but artistry and an eye for balance and beauty all play a role. Dr. Hu is one of the most respected plastic surgeons in the Southland, and a member of the medical staff at Providence/Holy Cross Medical Center. His meticulous approach to breast augmentation has led to his reputation for surgical excellence.
