For those who only require treatment of the upper eyelids, this procedure can be performed under local or general anesthesia. Patients requiring treatment of their lower eyelids or both upper and lower eyelids will have surgery under general anesthesia.
An eyelid lift begins with local anesthesia to numb the area being worked on. Dr. Hu will then make an incision along the crease of your eyelid or along your lower lash line, depending on which area he is tightening.
Excess skin and/or fat is then removed. When tightening the lower eyelids, fat may not be removed but instead be redistributed to present a more even appearance and reduce puffiness.
For the lower eyelids, some patients may only require the removal of a small amount of fat without the need for skin excision. For these patients, Dr. Hu can perform a transconjunctival technique, which means the only incision needed is on the inner part of the eyelid, and therefore there are no visible external scars.
Once the appropriate amount of tissue has been removed, Dr. Hu will then close the incisions. Although they are noticeable initially, there will be no visible scars once they have healed.
After surgery, you will be monitored until the effects of the anesthesia wear off, which can take anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours. You will be released once Dr. Hu is confident there are no complications, provided you have someone available to drive you home.
