While a surgical facelift can work wonders for the aging patient, there are those that wish to avoid the higher risks and costs of such a procedure and pursue instead a less invasive path towards facial rejuvenation. Dr. Hu is an accomplished facial plastic surgeon, but he is also an authority on non-surgical procedures such as facial and neck skin tightening and he can help you to obtain the refreshed, younger-looking aesthetic you desire.
As a general rule, skin tightening works by applying heat energy to the deepest skin layers in order to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin. These proteins are an integral component in the skin’s natural resilience, hydration and plumpness, yet they begin to dwindle as we age, creating more susceptibility to wrinkles, fine lines, creases and folds.
Non-surgical skin tightening has the following benefits:

Skin tightening has few negative side effects - however, it may not be right for those that are pregnant, those that suffer from serious medical conditions, or those taking certain prescription medications. In addition, clients should have realistic expectations for their results, based on their confidential consultation with Dr. Hu in the privacy of his Valencia, Santa Clarita offices.
In today’s technologically advanced marketplace, the FDA has approved many exciting new treatments that can help you to achieve your skin tightening goals.
Non-surgical skin tightening can be broadly separated into two categories: ablative and non-ablative techniques. Both are effective, but depending on the patient’s goals and downtime, one may be better suited than the other for each individual.
In general, ablative techniques (so called because it removes the superficial layers of skin) are more aggressive. The upside is that results tend to be more dramatic, and fewer sessions are required. The downside is that the patient will require more time off of work and activities, as the healing process is longer.
Non-ablative techniques are, in general, the opposite. Downtime is much shorter, and patients may resume work and activities much quicker. However, more treatments are often needed to achieve results.
Here at Valencia Plastic Surgery, Dr. Hu uses a fractionated carbon dioxide laser (CO2) laser for ablative skin resurfacing – the SmartSkin device developed by Cynosure. A fractional laser delivers tiny pinpoints of laser light to the skin, thus leaving healthy skin between the ablated areas to allow more rapid healing and lower risks. The laser heats the deeper dermal elements, which stimulates the formation of new collagen and elastin, helping to rejuvenate the skin to a more youthful appearance by reducing the severity of fine lines and wrinkles, and increasing the thickness of the skin.
This procedure can often be done in less than an hour, and the patient will then have a hydrating gel placed over the skin. The skin can remain red and dry for several days after treatment – this is often described as appearing to have a sun burn. Pinpoint bleeding can also be seen immediately after the procedure.
Facial rejuvenation can also be enhanced with PRP (platelet-rich plasma) infusions which can be performed in conjunction with fractionated laser treatment.
Here at Valencia Plastic Surgery, a selection of different non-ablative devices are available. Each device employs a different modality, but all offer a similar experience, namely short downtime and ease of treatment across multiple sessions.
IPL technology has many applications, including hair removal, acne treatment, and photorejuvenation to treat sun damage, pigmentation, and small blood vessels. A hand-held device is used to deliver a broad-spectrum pulse of light. This broad spectrum allows the device to utilize different wavelengths to treat these various conditions. Sessions typically take 30 minutes or less, with little downtime. Depending on the type of treatment needed, multiple sessions should be expected. Here at Valencia Plastic Surgery we use the ICON device developed by Cynosure.
Radiofrequency therapy is also used to stimulate and revive collagen that has been sacrificed to the aging process. The RF energy heats the tissue to stimulate collagen production to produce a smoother, more appealing skin appearance. Sessions typically take 30 minutes or less, and downtime is negligible. Multiple treatments should be expected. Here at Valencia Plastic Surgery we use the Exilis device developed by BTL.
